a man in a red toga offers his carriage to women in white dresses

A 17th century painting by Flamal showing a legendary scene - the statesman Albinus offering his carriage to the Vestal Virgins as the city is invaded

Ah, every woman loves a gentleman, and Lucius Postumius Albinus was one of the finest. As Rome found itself under attack by the Gauls in 390 BCE, he came to the rescue of the Vestal Virgins by offering them his personal carriage to escape the city. The chief Vestal holds in her hands a bronze vessel containing the sacred embers, which she will take to safety.
