a classical marble statue of an ancient priestess, meant to resemble a muse

A statue of Coelia Concordia, the last Vestalis Maxima of Rome (late 4th century CE to early 5th).

This statue was discovered on the Esquiline Hill in Rome in the 16th century and has been reworked into a Muse. The head, arms and implements are not Coelia Concordia. In antiquity, the medallion would have been inlaid with jewels. To read more about this statue and see a reproduction of the medallion, click here.

Coelia Concordia is the subject of my novel called Coelia Concordia: The Last Vestal Virgin of Rome.
